 Vignettes of Ghodkem, a solo exhibition by Goan artist Mohit Naik It was only a matter of time before Mohit Naik, son of the noted Goan artist Mohan Naik, unleashed the artist within. And, what better way to present his solo debut than capturing stunning scenes from his village, Ghodkem, in his paintings. Many artists have a muse, and generations of artists have been influenced by, and admired, the older genre of artists. And, it’s a no-brainer to figure out that Mohit Naik gleans inspiration from his father, Mohan, an artist who art aficionados and collectors have followed for over a couple of decades. FROM ACADEMICS TO ART Growing up with easels, paint and canvas, Mohit always wanted to be an artist. He painted on canvas in Std V, experimenting with varying mediums, and won school level competitions.  Glimpses of coastal life with artists Mohan Naik and Sivabalan Artists Sivabalan and Mohan Naik celebrate the rustic simplicity of seaside towns in a virtual exhibition titled ‘Stories of the Land’ There is far more to a beach destination than surf, sand, sunshine and an unbroken coastline as far as eye can see. Artists Sivabalan and Mohan Naik capture the domestic life of residents and not tourists, in their canvases that are a part of ‘Stories of the Land’. Picture Goa and the first image that comes to one’s mind is its pristine beaches. But artist Mohan Naik — through 26 artworks in different formats created using various techniques — depicts the simple village life of Pearl of the Orient at an ongoing show in the Capital. The south Goa-based artist, who lives in a quaint village, shares that he draws inspiration from his “immediate surroundings”. “I depict what I see around me in my own style — by simplifying the forms in Nature, animals, humans and trees,” says the artist, who in the initial stages of his career, was influenced by Indian miniature paintings and the works of old masters. “I always had a love for my village and wanted to depict it in my own way,” says Naik, a graduate from Goa College of Art and he informs that after his education in art he could do it well because his “art...

When it rains heavily they use Ghogani pavs (heavy rains) to describe the situation. Can you describe the heavy rain situation and relate it with abundant riches which flow day in and day out of the coffers of a rich family in Goa. Certainly, if you take the case of the Menezes family from Panzorconi Cuncolim who at one point of time was one of the richest families in Cuncolim according to historical data available in the archives in possession of the family and also with families related to the Menezes family. With cash and riches flowing in the Menezes house the locals chose to name it as Ghoghea ghor, the name which remains affixed to it till date.
