CUNCOLIM: For the past several years, Cuncolkars have been demanding a Fire Station in Cuncolim Municipal area, but the government has yet to show any positive response to their long-pending demands.
Locals, industrialist, politicians and even Cuncolim Municipal Council had put forth a strong recommendation before the government in this regard, but there are no visible results so far.
It appears as if the government is in no hurry nor is keen to give any assurances to Cuncolkars on their demand for a fire station.
Ten years ago, the then MLA Joaquim Alemao had initiated the primary works to set up fire brigade and emergency centre at Cuncolim. Even the land was suggested at Cuncolim Industrial Estate for the proposed fire Station. Alemao had even drafted the proposal, but subsequently it remained entwined in red tape.
After Alemao, former BJP MLA Rajan Naik also followed up this proposal and made a demand at a public function in the presence Manohar Parrikar, who was also the chief minister then. However, even then, Rajan and Cuncolkars demand did not find any favour from the chief minister.
It is learnt from some BJP sources that Parrikar had told them there were other priorities than setting up a fire Station. Since then this proposal of fire station has been gathering dust in the files.
Interestingly, questions have been raised from some government officers that weather there is really a need of fire station to Cuncolim.
However, some answers are never difficult. And considering the existence of an industrial estate at Cuncolim, were there are over 80 small and large units, including chemical factories, there are still factories and other hazardous industries, the need for a fire station is urgent and the threat of fire looms.
At least on four occasions Cuncolim industrial estate has experienced fire incidents. Besides the industrial estate there is a market and pilgrimage sites and temples in Fatorpa, which is close to Cuncolim. There is also Cutbina fishing jetty close by.
Besides, there are two petrol pumps, schools and other institutions which can be benefited if there is a fire station in Cuncolim.
Cuncolim is also becoming an educational hub, with a huge NIT complex coming up in Cuncolim. Recently a fire incident was also reported at Cuncolim police station.
Again, if the government sets up a fire station, it will also benefit villages like Balli, Fatorpa, Assolna, Sarzora , Betul, Velim, Paddi, Ambaulim and other surrounding villages.
Cuncolim Municipal Council in their meeting has resolved to demand a fire station at Cuncolim. The council has decided to find out suitable land for the fire station and has also decided to demand that the government set up a fire station soon.
Vice Chairperson Sashank Dessai said there is an urgent need of fire station in Cuncolim and strong case will be put before the government in this regard.
MLA Clafacio Dias is also trying to put his weight behind the issue, to fulfil Cuncolkar’s demand of a fire station.
In fact, in 2013 Cuncolim Municipal Council even passed a resolution to set up a fire station. And four years later, the council has again passed a resolution to press for the demand.
Some time ago, the council had identified a place at government-acquired land at Panzorconi. The council too has acquired land at Kaita near KTC bus stand and there is plenty of land available at the garbage site, where the fire station can be set up.
Besides, there is also land available at IDC, which belongs to Industrial Development Corporation.
However, it seems that the real issue is not the problem of land, as the government seems to be facing financial and manpower problem to set up the fire station in Cuncolim.
